What YouTube currently counts as a Short
On 13 October 2026 YouTube's help page on three-minute Shorts said Shorts can run up to three minutes. For standard channels, videos uploaded after October 15, 2024 that are square or vertical and up to three minutes long are classified as Shorts; earlier uploads stay long-form. Official Artist Channels have a separate cutoff date on the same page. [1]
That classification rule is the whole reason a horizontal export does not become a Short by being short. A 16:9 tutorial clip stays a regular video. You have to deliver a square or portrait frame, which means deciding what to cut away. This guide is based on YouTube's published documentation, not on our own uploads or testing.
The one-minute line that matters more than the three-minute cap
The same page says a Short longer than one minute with an active copyright claim of any type, including a manual claim, is blocked globally: it cannot be played, recommended or monetized until the claim is resolved. Shorts of one minute or less are not subject to that block. [1]
Music limits also shrink the usable length. On 13 October 2026 the page said most songs from the Shorts audio library can be used for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, and some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. [1] If your tutorial already has a background track, assume it can cause trouble in a longer Short unless you know its rights status.
| Clip plan | Classified as Short? | Claim risk to check |
|---|---|---|
| 16:9 clip, 45 seconds | No, horizontal frame | Ordinary video claim rules |
| 9:16 clip, 50 seconds | Yes, if uploaded under current rules | Not subject to the over-one-minute block |
| 9:16 clip, 2 minutes 30 seconds | Yes | Any active claim blocks it globally |
| 9:16 clip, 3 minutes 20 seconds | No, over the length limit | Treated as long-form |
Who should repurpose, and who should skip
Repurposing suits tutorials with one clear moment: a single setting change, a keyboard shortcut, a before-and-after result. It works poorly for multi-window workflows where the viewer needs to see a menu on the left and a result on the right at the same time.
Skip it if the original was recorded at a resolution where small UI text is already hard to read in full frame. A vertical crop of a horizontal screen keeps roughly a third of the width, so text that was marginal becomes illegible. The no-purchase option is to re-record the key step at a larger zoom or interface scale rather than buying a reframing tool.
A reframing procedure that protects readability
- Pick the moment first, then the crop. Write down the exact on-screen element the viewer must read.
- Set the sequence to a vertical or square frame before placing the clip, so you are cropping rather than letterboxing.
- Keyframe the crop to follow the cursor or active panel instead of holding a single centered window.
- Check every crop at actual phone size. Preview on a phone, not on a large monitor.
- Replace unreadable UI text with a short on-screen caption or a zoomed insert of the same moment.
- Strip or replace music whose rights you cannot confirm if the cut runs past one minute. [1]
- Export a test, upload it as unlisted if your workflow allows, and confirm it appears where Shorts appear before scheduling a series.
Worked example: a fictional settings tutorial
This example is invented. A creator has a 14-minute horizontal tutorial about export presets. The useful Short is the 40 seconds where the preset is chosen and saved. The crop follows the dropdown, then cuts to a zoomed insert of the save dialog because the filename field is unreadable at phone size.
A second candidate, a two-and-a-half-minute walkthrough of the whole export panel, uses the same licensed-sounding background bed from the original. Because it runs past one minute, any active claim on that bed would block the Short globally. [1] The creator mutes the music on that cut and adds narration only. Nothing here reflects a real channel's results.
Pitfalls we would plan around
Captions burned into the original often sit at the bottom of a 16:9 frame and get cut off or overlap the vertical UI. Remove them from the source edit or rebuild captions for the vertical frame.
Do not assume old uploads will be reclassified; the help page ties classification to upload dates. [1] Also do not treat the three-minute cap as a target. A tutorial Short that needs three minutes is usually a regular video with chapters, which this site covers separately.
Finally, re-read YouTube's help page before a batch of uploads. The length cap, claim handling and music limits have all been expressed as current policy that can change, and we have only checked them as of 13 October 2026.
Questions before you decide
Will a 16:9 clip under one minute count as a Short?
Not under the rules YouTube published on 13 October 2026. Classification requires a square or vertical aspect ratio as well as a length of three minutes or less.
What happens if a two-minute Short gets a copyright claim?
YouTube says a Short over one minute with an active claim of any type is blocked globally until the claim is resolved, so it cannot be played, recommended or monetized.
