Start with the account, not the image
The most common reason a custom thumbnail button is missing is not the image at all. YouTube's verification page lists uploading videos longer than 15 minutes, adding custom thumbnails, live streaming and appealing copyright claims as features unlocked by phone verification, which sends a code by text or voice call. [2]
Do this once, before the upload day. Some carriers do not support Google's messages, so YouTube suggests trying another number or the other delivery option if a code does not arrive. [2] This guide is based on YouTube Help pages checked on 13 October 2026; we have not uploaded test thumbnails.
The documented file requirements
Design at the recommended size and export once at full resolution, then make a smaller copy only if you upload from a phone. YouTube also notes that a vertical video with a 16:9 thumbnail may be shown with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on some surfaces, while the custom image still appears elsewhere. [1]
| Requirement | Long-form video | Shorts | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recommended resolution | 3840 x 2160 | 2160 x 3840 | [1] |
| Minimum | 640 pixels wide | 640 pixels high | [1] |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 | 9:16 | [1] |
| Formats | Image formats such as JPG or PNG | Same | [1] |
| File size | Desktop 50MB; mobile 2MB for video thumbnails (10MB for podcasts) | Desktop 50MB | [1] |
| Where to add | YouTube Studio | YouTube Studio on a computer, verified account | [1] |
A preflight checklist for each thumbnail
- Channel is phone-verified and the custom thumbnail option appears in Studio. [2]
- Canvas is 16:9 for long-form or 9:16 for Shorts, exported as JPG or PNG. [1]
- File is under the limit for the device you upload from. [1]
- Every face, object and claim in the image appears in the video.
- Text is readable when the image is shrunk to phone-feed size; check it at about 10 percent zoom.
- Important text is not in the corner where the duration stamp usually appears.
- You own or have licensed every photo, logo and font in the image.
What gets thumbnails removed
YouTube's thumbnails policy prohibits sexual content, violent imagery meant to shock, vulgar language and impersonation. It also lists misleading thumbnails: an image that makes viewers think they are about to see something that is not in the video. [3] For a tutorial channel, the realistic risk is the last one: a dramatic before-and-after that the video never shows, or a product logo implying an endorsement.
Consequences escalate. The policy says a violating thumbnail is removed and a strike may be issued, with a first offense usually receiving a warning; some borderline images are age-restricted or removed without a strike. [3] The custom thumbnail help page adds that repeat offenses can remove custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days or lead to account termination. [1]
Testing variants: what YouTube's built-in test measures
YouTube Studio on a computer can test up to three titles and thumbnails on an eligible video. The help page says the option with the highest watch time is shown to all viewers, rather than the one with the highest click-through rate, and that a test should complete within two weeks. Shorts, scheduled lives, premieres before they end, made-for-kids, mature-audience and private videos are excluded, and advanced features must be enabled. [4]
Results can be Winner, Performed Same or Inconclusive; if inconclusive, the first uploaded option becomes the default. [4] Our suggestion is to vary one element at a time, such as text or the main image, so a result tells you something you can reuse.
Worked example: a fictional software tutorial
In this invented case, a creator exports a 1280 x 720 thumbnail with eight words of small text and uploads it from a phone. It meets the 640-pixel minimum, but the text is unreadable at feed size and the image is far below the recommended resolution. The fix is a 3840 x 2160 export with three words, a screenshot of the actual result shown in the video, and a check of the file size against the mobile limit before upload.
No paid design tool is required for this. Any editor that exports a still frame or PNG at the right size, including the free editors compared elsewhere on this site, can produce a compliant thumbnail.
Questions before you decide
Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail?
YouTube lists custom thumbnails among the features unlocked by phone verification. Verify the channel in YouTube Studio, then check that the file is a JPG or PNG within the documented size limit for the device you are using.
Should I use 1280 x 720 or 3840 x 2160?
On 13 October 2026 YouTube's help page recommended 3840 x 2160 for videos, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. A smaller image may be accepted, but design at the recommended size and export a compressed copy if a mobile upload limit gets in the way.
